Overview

The City of Lethbridge, Recreation and Culture Department is currently inviting applications for two (2) term Nature Interpretation Program Leader positions at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre. This an exciting, public-facing role that supports all aspects of the Nature Centre’s operations, including program development and delivery, exhibitions, facility rentals, conservation projects, and information services, all while working in an environment focused on community connection.

STATUS: Non-Permanent Term (up to 4 months; from April 29, 2026 to September 2, 2026)

HOURS OF WORK: Casual, 0-40 hours per week; shift work including evening and weekend work is required

PAY RATE: $34.91 per hour

POSITIONS: Up to 2 positions available 

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of the Nature Centre’s school and public interpretive programs which includes full-day camps, children and family nature programs, and off-site programming. They will inspire stewardship and sustainable recreational use of public parks.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver children’s interpretive programs which includes day camps and school programs.
  • Lead nature-based programming for family, youth and adult groups.
  • Facilitate the use of indoor and outdoor exhibits.
  • Support the facility rental program.
  • Lead and support river valley conservation programs, including strenuous outdoor work.
  • Perform cash handling duties.
  • Assist with collecting natural history data and research information.
  • Oversee maintenance of program materials and facilities including the living roof space.
  • Develop non-personal interpretive materials (e.g. displays, signs, etc.)

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED is required with a strong preference for post-secondary students or graduates in related fields of science, education or communications.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in interpretation or a related field is required.
  • Good working knowledge of local ecosystems (plant and wildlife identification, ecological processes and basic biological concepts) is required.
  • Previous experience working with children in an instructional/supervisory role.
  • Candidates must be physically fit with the ability to work in a wide range of environmental conditions, including extreme weather (e.g., heat, rain, etc.).
  • Must possess excellent communication skills with the ability to work with the public in a confident, friendly, customer-focused manner.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.
  • Valid First Aid certificate is an asset at the time of application.

 

Additional Information:

  • Successful candidates will be required to submit to a criminal record check prior as a condition of employment.
  • Successful candidates will be required to complete First Aid training upon hire if they are not certified.

 

If you are not currently a City of Lethbridge employee, at the time an offer of employment is provided, you will be responsible for providing a copy of a five-year Commercial OR Non-Commercial Driver’s Abstract. The Driver’s Abstract is to be obtained within 30 calendar days of the date of offer and applicants will be responsible for the cost of obtaining the Abstract. If you do not submit an Abstract, or the Abstract shows 6 or more demerits or includes any of the unacceptable driving items listed below, your offer of employment may be rescinded. The City of Lethbridge reserves the right to determine what is a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.

An unacceptable driving record includes, but is not limited to:

  • A record of any suspension of Operator’s License within the preceding three years which is related to a driving offence.
  • An overall driving history that reflects poor driving behavior, will be determined at the discretion of the City.
  • Within the preceding three years any Criminal Code or Provincial driving conviction including:
  1. Impaired Driving related offence
  2. Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  3. Criminal Flight from a Peace Officer
  4. Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident
  5. Driving while Disqualified/Prohibited
  6. Careless Driving
