STATUS: Non-Permanent Term, up to 2 years (subject to continued external funding)
HOURS OF WORK: 37.5 hours weekly; 7.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday
PAY RATE: $33.20 per hour (rate under review)
Working in partnership with the Community Social Development team, the Encampment Response Team, and other internal and community partners, the Outreach Worker provides frontline outreach support to individuals experiencing homelessness including engagement, basic system navigation, wellness checks, and referrals to community services, with a focus on safety, consistency, and relationship building.
The position supports coordinated encampment responses and hotspot outreach activities, reports to the Operations Manager, and works under the infield direction of Outreach Specialists. The role emphasizes trauma informed engagement, situational awareness, and accurate documentation while operating within established procedures and defined scope of practice.
In this role, you will:
- Work collaboratively with Community Social Development staff to provide outreach services to individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Participate in outreach services through regular patrols and deployment to encampments and hotspot locations.
- Engage individuals using a trauma informed, person-centered approach to build rapport and encourage connection to services.
- Conduct wellness checks alongside Outreach Specialists and support access to immediate, needs such as shelter, food, clothing, transportation, and basic income information.
- Provide referrals and explain available community services, eligibility, and access points, as directed by Outreach Specialists.
- Support outreach deployments by maintaining consistent presence and assisting with on-site coordination.
- Encourage safer practices and educate encampment occupants about environmental, fire, and personal safety risks.
- Communicate participant updates, emerging risks, and operational concerns to Outreach Specialists and relevant internal teams.
- Work respectfully with community members, service providers, and partner agencies to support coordinated, non-duplicative service delivery.
- Ensure all outreach interactions, referrals, and participant updates are accurately documented in the City approved Client Information Management System.
- Work in partnership with other community providers in order to ensure participant needs are met while limiting any duplication of services.
- Work within the Integrated Coordinated Access (ICA) system as a system partner which includes the completion of all required trainings.
Qualifications & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent GED.
- Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable or marginalized populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, addictions, or social instability.
- Experience engaging with individuals in unpredictable or emotionally charged situations.
- Familiarity with frontline outreach, wellness checks, or community-based support work is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
- Ability to work using trauma informed and culturally respectful practices.
- Situational awareness and ability to assess and respond to safety risks.
- Ability to follow established procedures and work within defined scope of practice.
- Basic computer skills, including data entry and electronic documentation.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Additional Information:
- This is a grant funded position and is subject to the continued receipt of funding from other orders of government.
- The successful applicant under consideration must have a valid Alberta class 5 driver’s license.
- The successful applicant under consideration will be required to complete and pass a Police Information Check, Vulnerable Sector Check and Intervention Record Check conducted by Lethbridge Police Service.

- Within the preceding three years any Criminal Code or Provincial driving conviction including:
- Impaired Driving related offence
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Criminal Flight from a Peace Officer
- Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident
- Drive while Disqualified/Prohibited
- Careless Driving
