Overview

The City of Lethbridge has a seasonal term opportunity for a Maintenance Worker at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden (NYJG). Working under the direction of the NYJG Foreman, this position is responsible for assistance with all aspects of garden maintenance at the NYJG.

STATUS: Seasonal

HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week

PAY RATE: $30.14 per hour

 

In this role, you will:

  • Perform garden maintenance tasks including mowing, weed whipping, weeding, pond maintenance, litter clean up, shoveling, raking and pathway cleaning.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance and lifecycle work on small shrubs and turf, which may include pruning in the Japanese Garden style such as candling, thinning, removals, replacement transplants, new plantings, reseeding grass, etc.
  • Perform maintenance and lifecycle work on infrastructure features such as water features, pathways, amenities, etc.
  • Use work-related power equipment and tools including self-propelled and push mowers, backpack blowers, weed whippers, and hedge trimmers.
  • Assist the NYJG Foreman in liaising between various organizations/groups (City Departments, Japanese Garden Society, volunteers, and contractors).
  • Answer any questions NYJG visitors may have or direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license is required.
  • Current First Aid and WHMIS certifications.
  • Previous experience in a garden/similar setting is preferred.
  • Sound working knowledge of turf-related equipment including power tools and hand tools.
  • Willingness to learn the history and features of the NYJG with a genuine interest in maintaining an authentic Japanese Garden.
  • Physical strength and dexterity to perform strenuous labour for extended periods of time under varying weather conditions.
  • Excellent customer service skills to perform duties within a high-profile work environment (Provincial and Municipal Designated Heritage Resource).
  • Excellent communication skills to carry out duties based on oral and written instructions.
  • Strong work ethic, with high standards for detail.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Basic computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  2. Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  3. Criminal Flight from a Peace Officer
  4. Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident
  5. Drive while Disqualified/Prohibited
  6. Careless Driving
