PAY RATE: Start Rate: $31.92 per hour (2026 start rate – first 2080 hours threshold)
Job Rate: $35.47 per hour (2026 job rate – after 2080 hours threshold successfully met
Lethbridge Transit is seeking dedicated and safety-focused individuals to join our team as Transit Fixed Route Operators. This is a non-permanent term opportunity of up to 12 months, with potential pathways to permanent employment.
Reporting to the Transit Workforce Manager, Transit Fixed Route Operators are at the heart of keeping Lethbridge moving. Every shift is an opportunity to safely connect people to where they need to go while delivering a positive, respectful, and reliable transit experience.
In this role, you will:
- Confidently and safely operate a transit bus along assigned routes, navigating city streets while maintaining professional driving standards, obeying traffic laws, and following transit policies and procedures.
- Be a key ambassador for Lethbridge Transit by creating a welcoming, respectful, and customer-focused environment for every passenger.
- Deliver a high level of customer service by assisting riders, answering questions when needed, and ensuring every interaction reflects care and professionalism.
- Maintain on-time performance while adapting to real-time road conditions, traffic, weather, and service disruptions with sound judgment.
- Process fares using an electronic fare collection system and ensure a smooth boarding experience for customers.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, colleagues, and the public to support efficient service delivery.
- Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure your vehicle is safe, reliable, and ready for service.
- Respond professionally to a wide range of situations on board, using strong judgment, patience, and problem-solving skills.
- Contribute to a positive and respectful team culture that values safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Take pride in consistent attendance and punctuality, knowing your role directly impacts hundreds of daily riders
What You Bring to the Table:
We are looking for professionals who take pride in safe driving, strong judgment, and delivering outstanding public service. Safety and customer experience are at the core of everything we do.
Qualifications & Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent GED is required.
- Valid a class 1, class 2 or class 2 MELT license with a Q endorsement, or the ability to successfully obtain Q endorsement is required.
- Demonstrated experience operating large or commercial vehicles in a professional capacity is preferred.
- Previous municipal transit experience is a strong asset.
- Strong commitment to delivering excellent customer service in a public-facing role.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage respectfully with a diverse public.
- Ability to work independently with sound judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in time-sensitive situations.
Additional Information:
- Working a variable shift schedule is a requirement of the role to ensure reliable transit service for the community every day. Shifts will include days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and split shifts.
- All successful applicants under consideration will be required to complete a Police Information Check through Lethbridge Regional Police Service.

If you are not currently a City of Lethbridge employee, at the time an offer of employment is provided, you will be responsible for providing a copy of a five-year Commercial Driver’s Abstract. The Driver’s Abstract is to be obtained within 30 calendar days of the date of offer and applicants will be responsible for the cost of obtaining the Abstract. If you do not submit an Abstract, or the Abstract shows 6 or more demerits or includes any of the unacceptable driving items listed below, your offer of employment may be rescinded. The City of Lethbridge reserves the right to determine what is a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.
An unacceptable driving record includes, but is not limited to:
- A record of any suspension of Operator’s License within the preceding three years which is related to a driving offence.
- An overall driving history that reflects poor driving behavior, will be determined at the discretion of the City.
- Within the preceding three years any Criminal Code or Provincial driving conviction including:
- Impaired Driving related offence
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Criminal Flight from a Peace Officer
- Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident
- Drive while Disqualified/Prohibited
- Careless Driving
If you are a current City of Lethbridge employee, depending on the circumstances of your current position, you may also be required to provide a five-year Commercial Abstract as part of the recruitment process.
