Lethbridge Transit has a career-building opportunity for a permanent Transit Demand Response/Paratransit (AAR) Operator. The Transit Demand Response/Paratransit (AAR) Operator, under the leadership of the Transit Operations Manager, will be responsible for ensuring that transit services are delivered safely, efficiently, and with a strong focus on customer service excellence

PAY RATE:           Start Rate: $30.83 per hour (2026 start rate – first 2080 hours threshold)

                            Job Rate: $34.26 per hour (2026 job rate – after 2080 hours threshold successfully met)

 

The Transit Demand Response (ROD) / Access-A-Ride (AAR) Operator provides safe, reliable, and customer-focused transportation services throughout the community. While Ride on Demand (ROD) service is primarily a curb-to-curb service, Access-A-Ride (AAR) is a shared ride, door-to-door service that requires operators to provide assistance to customers with varying mobility and accessibility needs.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Confidently and safely operate a Paratransit (AAR) bus, navigating city streets while maintaining professional driving standards, obeying traffic laws, and following transit policies and procedures.
  • Be a key ambassador for Lethbridge Transit by creating a welcoming, respectful, and customer-focused environment for every passenger.
  • Deliver a high level of customer service by assisting riders, answering questions when needed, and ensuring every interaction reflects care, dignity, and professionalism.
  • Maintain schedule performance while adapting to real-time road conditions, traffic, weather, and service disruptions with sound judgment.
  • Regularly assist customers using wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, canes, and other mobility devices.
  • Operate ramps and lifts, secure mobility devices, assist customers to and from the vehicle, and provide a safe, respectful, and positive customer experience.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, colleagues, and the public to support efficient service delivery.
  • Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure your vehicle is safe, reliable, and ready for service.
  • Respond professionally to a wide range of situations on board, using strong judgment, patience, and problem-solving skills.
  • Contribute to a positive and respectful team culture that values safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Take pride in consistent attendance and punctuality, knowing your role directly impacts hundreds of daily service users.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED required.
  • Valid Class 4 Operator’s license required.
  • Proven experience safely operating buses or other similarly sized passenger transportation vehicles.
  • Previous municipal transit experience is a strong asset.
  • Ability to work shift work with a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends is required.
  • Ability to provide hands-on assistance to customers throughout their shift including frequent entering and exiting of the vehicle, operating accessibility equipment, securing mobility devices, and assisting customers with varying physical, mobility, and accessibility needs.
  • Strong commitment to delivering excellent customer service in a public-facing role.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage respectfully with a diverse public.
  • Ability to work independently with sound judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in time-sensitive situations.

 

Additional Information

  • Working a variable shift schedule is a requirement of the role to ensure reliable transit service for the community every day. Shifts will include days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and split shifts.
  • Applicants should be comfortable working directly with customers in a physically active and customer-service-focused environment
  • All successful applicants under consideration will be required to successfully complete and pass a Police Information Check conducted by Lethbridge Regional Police Service.

The Driver’s Abstract is to be obtained within 30 calendar days of the date of offer and applicants will be responsible for the cost of obtaining the Abstract. If you do not submit an Abstract, or the Abstract shows 6 or more demerits or includes any of the unacceptable driving items listed below, your offer of employment may be rescinded. The City of Lethbridge reserves the right to determine what is a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.

 

An unacceptable driving record includes, but is not limited to:

  • A record of any suspension of Operator’s License within the preceding three years which is related to a driving offence.
  • An overall driving history that reflects poor driving behavior, will be determined at the discretion of the City.
  • Within the preceding three years any Criminal Code or Provincial driving conviction including:
  1. Impaired Driving related offence
  2. Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  3. Criminal Flight from a Peace Officer
  4. Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident
  5. Drive while Disqualified/Prohibited
  6. Careless Driving

 

If you are a current City of Lethbridge employee, depending on the circumstances of your current position, you may also be required to provide a five-year Commercial OR Non-Commercial Driver’s Abstract as part of the recruitment process.
